Vedi Vazhipadu (Fire Cracks) is a holy offering made regularly at Malanada Temple. Sreemathy Amma is currently the only female doing this job. She started doing it in the year 1982 when her husband died in a fire accident. The job was his family’s legacy handed over by generations of ancestors. The craft however was only passed down to the males of the family. She was the first female in their history to take up this position. Back then, when she started the job she used to offer garlands to the deities daily. She would collect flowers from nearby places and wreath them together into beautiful garlands. She started exploring her love for flowers and created a garden right behind the bandolier. Afterwards her garlands were made mostly from the flowers she found in her own garden. She wreaths these garlands all day and night. She is a very devoted and a highly spiritual person. She starts and ends her day with yoga, meditation and prayers. Sreemathy notes that she wouldn’t feel content if any one of this is missed out. As she does the job with love and utmost care she remains the last woman doing this job.
