On Dano Day, a traditional holiday held on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, Yi Mong-ryong (Kim Jin-kyu), the son of Namwon’s magistrate, visits Gwanghallu Pavilion and sees Chun-hyang (Choi Eunhee) riding a swing. He sends his servant Bang-ja (Heo Jang-kang) to bring her to him. But Chun-hyang, the proud and educated daughter of a gisaeng mother and a noble father, refuses—she may be of low status, but she will not be summoned like a servant.
