올해 서울노인영화제 개막작으로 상영하는 <머스트 비 헤븐>은 엘리아 술레이만 감독의 신작으로, 2020년 칸 영화제에서 심사위원 특별언급상과 국제비평가상을 받은 작품이다. 주인공은 '집'이라는 공간과, 더 나아가 '집(Home)으로서의 국가'라는 의미를 찾아서, 여러 나라의 경계를 자유롭게 넘나들며 다양한 환경 속에서 살아가는 사람들의 일상을 연륜 있는 관찰자의 시선으로 우리에게 전해준다. 현재 코로나 시대로 국가 간의 경계와 사회적 거리를 경험하고 있지만, 영화라는 사이공간을 통해서 우리와 정서적, 지리적으로 멀리 있는 도시의 일상과 사람들의 인간적이고 감동적인 모습은 우리의 삶이 동시대라는 한 공간에서 연결되어 있음을 느끼게 해준다. 가장 먼 곳으로부터의 일상은 현재 살아가는 세상과 우리 주변 사람들에 대해 생각할 기회를 줄 것이다.

A new film directed by Elia Suleiman <It Must Be Heaven> will be screened as the opening film. The film won the Special Jurys Mention and the FIPRESCI Prize at the Cannes this year. The protagonist looks for the meaning of "home", furthermore, “Country as home,”, he freely crosses the boundaries of various countries, and conveys to us the daily lives of people in various environments. Although we are currently experiencing the boundaries and social distance between countries in the Corona era, moving images of film make us feel that our lives are connected in this ‘contemporary’ sphere. Daily life from the furthest will give us an opportunity to think about the world we live in and the people around us.
